A word from Master Coach Ehrlich:
I have been fortunate in having many excellent martial arts instructors (see list in coach’s profile) in the fifty years I have been training. I always wondered, ‘we are learning to fight, but we do not hit anything that reacts to our punches and kicks or that offers resistance to our blows.’ The bulk of class time was practicing blocks, punches, and kicks hitting nothing but air.

At Grand Master Ki Whang Kim’s school, I was the first black belt (1966-67) to use the heavy bag as a teaching/learning aid. In addition, back then, I really had no idea how to
correctly use the bag, but I knew we should be hitting something with resistance.

Only my Muay Thai (Thai boxing) and boxing coaches emphasized how important it is to hit bags. Hitting bags/targets have many advantages over hitting air. Let’s look at some of them:

  • It is more fun
  • It is safer
  • Gives you a better workout for improved muscle tone and building strength and endurance
  • Teaches distance judgment
  • Develops faster reactions
  • Gives you feed back to your skills
  • Develops accuracy
  • Enables you to adjust to the opposite and equal reaction of your punches and kicks on a solid target
